Quasi-two-dimensional turbulent flow in rectangular box

Abstract:
We study experimentally large scale flow emerging in the two-dimensional turbulence when the inverse cascade is confined to the system size. Experiments are carried out with a thin layer of stratified fluids enclosed with rectangular container of length to width ratio 2:1 and 3:1. The turbulence is induced at upper electrolytic layer by stationary Lorentz force periodic in the plane of fluid layer. We observe formation of large scale vortices which size is limited by the width of the container.
