We develop the direct scattering transform for the self-focusing NLS equation with periodic boundary conditions, which are small perturbation of the constant solution. In this case all finite-gap formulas are reduced to elementary functions, and we obtain $\epsilon$-expansion for the algebrogeometrical data. A comarison with numerical simulation using spectral-split approach is discussed.
