Heavy Higgs modes and little Higgs sector in superfluid 3He
Date/Time: 11:50 25-Jun-2015
Abstract:
In superfluid 3He-B, there are 14 heavy Higgs amplitude modes, and 4 Nambu-Goldstone (NG) modes with linear dispersion (3 spin wave modes and the sound mode). The heavy Higgs bosons satisfy the Nambu sum rule. Due to tiny spin-orbit interaction, three spin modes in 3He-B form the so-called little Higgs sector, which contains two NG modes and one light Higgs with small mass (the mode excited in longitudinal NMR). The little Higgs sector of 3He-B is similar to Standard Model, which contains the 125 GeV Higgs mode and three NG modes (the latter become massive due to Higgs mechanism). This analogy suggests that the Standard Model represents the low-energy sector, which emerges from the underlying high-energy physics due to hidden symmetry (in 3He-B the role of hidden symmetry is played by the approximate spin-rotation symmetry). The little Higgs scenario of Standard Model may explain why the mass of observed 125 GeV Higgs boson is small compared to the characteristic electroweak energy scale. It also suggests existence of the heavier Higgs bosons. Recent experiments with heavy and light Higgs modes in condensed matter are discussed.
